In this article, I will be writing about 7 hot business ideas for students in Nigeria. Just like the recently concluded Lucrative business ideas in Nigeria.
This article is for students who don’t want to rely on pocket money solely.
Pocket money will never be enough, even if your parents decide to be paying 50k per month, trust me, you will finish it before the end of the month and be asking yourself; “how manage?”
But as a student who has a side hustle, you won’t leave like the average student in your school.
So read through carefully and pick the one or possibly more than one that you know will be convenient for you.
1. Phone Cases/ Phone Gadgets
Students mostly in Nigeria love to make their phones look good, mostly with cases that look rare and beautiful to find.
If you want to start this business, you can order them online as foreign cases are more acceptable in the Nigerian market where students dominate.
Not because they are foreign but because they are rare to find elsewhere and most students love to have what every other student craves for.”
You can get these phone cases from Wish (use coupon code: “cggjrhwv” to get a 50% price cut)
But if you choose to use the popular china online marketplace, Ali Express, there are two major things you must look out for;
- Cheap Phone cases
- Free shipping
The reason why you must check out those two factors is that you don’t want to be selling at a very unreasonable price that will chase students away. “Students always like cheap prices”
With N20,000 you can order more than 30 phone cases.
Let’s say you sell each for N1,500. That will be = N37,500
Cool Cash! from the comfort of your room.
In addition, it is easy to sell phone cases/ phone gadgets in a student environment. In just one hostel you can meet over 50 people who will definitely show your products to their friends without you asking them to.

2. Ordering Fancy stuff that fascinates students.
Just like the phone cases, you can also order fancy stuff that fascinates students.
An example of what am saying is “artificial stars” that you can find in student rooms
I guess you see those fine designs of the moon and stars. That’s what am talking about, fancy things like that have high demand within the student environment.
You can order from Wish or from Ali Express.

3. Phone Repair
The rate at which phones get spoiled among students is high and it is mostly a result of overuse, the phone fell, the owner sat on the phone, or something else.
Students who repair phones in school always have patronage as long as they are good at it.
But if you are a terrible phone repairer, no one will want to risk giving their phones to you for repair.
You can make as high as 50k net profit from this business monthly if you are good at fixing phones.
So, if you are a student and you are interested in this business, go learn from a professional, and within 6 months you should be able to conveniently repair high-grade phones without fear of damaging the phone.
The cost of starting this business is little to nothing as you can be doing it from the comfort of your room.
But if you decide to have an office, that will be better, as it will give you more popularity.
First thing first, make sure you are good at fixing phones before you start this business.

4. Hair Cutting (barbing)
This is mostly for Male students who already know how to barb hair.
As a student you do not necessarily need to have a shop space for your saloon, you can start by using the compound of your hostel.
I remember a guy who barbs in my hostel back then. Before the end of that session, he was able to gather money to open a shop “because he was really good.”
All that is needed in this business is that you are really good.
Other things, like shopping and more customers, will fall into place if you continue rendering quality and professional haircut services.
As for those who don’t know how to barb but love to do this kind of business in school, you can always go to learn during holidays and is mostly free or little to nothing to learn.
Within 2 to 3 months if really you put your mind to it, you should be ready to go.
I have this article on how you can start a barbing salon business in Nigeria read it for more details about the barbing salon business.
5. Hair Making or Beauty Salon
Just like barbing this is strictly for the ladies.
Making hair is no different from cutting hair. All that is needed is that you are good at your craft.
Ladies like their hair neatly done, and when the hair gets bad within a short time of plaiting it they might not patronize you again.
If you can render a good hair plaiting and beauty service, this business is for you.
If you want to start this business, you don’t really need much, you can start in your room, buy the little kits you can buy and you are good to go.
In addition, this business goes together with the making of artificial wigs (wig caps).
While doing this business, you can also add makeup business to it, if you are good at it too.

6. Thrift/Retailing
We all have a lot of things at home that we don’t use anymore. All you have to do is to pack them, iron them(if they are clothes), and put them on sale on online platforms that accept fairly used items.
Popular online marketplace platforms you can take advantage of to sell fairly used items are; eBay, and Jiji.
Please don’t go and pack both the useful and unuseful in your house to sell on those platforms because you want to make money.

7. Laundry services
Most students are generally lazy when it comes to washing their clothes.
Apart from students, you can also extend your laundry services to your lectures.
I know a friend who does laundry service back then in school and he made a lot both from students and from lecturers.
Ladies mostly fall into this category of students who are lazy or don’t just want to engage in chores like washing clothes.
It is either because they always fix their nails or they are not used to washing clothes with their hands from home.
So if you are a lady and you want to go into this business, all you have to do to get high demand is;
- Render a good and quality Landry service
- Look for those ladies that love fixing nails, and introduce your laundry services to them. 90% of them will say Yes.
Make sure you render good service oh. Don’t be like the laundry man I gave my white T-shirt to wash for me at the NYSC camp, instead of me seeing the white turning more white, I ended up getting a brown T-shirt. That was the last time I gave that guy any of my clothes to wash.

8. Recharge Card Business
Just like students can’t do without food and clothes, they can’t do without recharge cards.
Even the most broke students must buy a card, just to call their people at home and tell them how broke and hungry they are at the moment.
Students always make money from this business.
All that is needed in this business is that you buy your recharge cards from wholesalers at a cheaper rate and sell them at a retail price.
